Science vs. Faith

at 8:02 PM
There is nothing that appalls me more than hypocrisy. I don't care what you believe in. But so long as you claim to believe in it, you'd better follow it. Practice what you preach. The flip side of that, however, is what I find worse. When you argue against something because they do x, y, or z and yet your own argument includes x, y, and z.

One thing I call my students out on every day is that they are not allowed to diss each other for doing something wrong when it's something they do themselves. Today one of my worst students (refuses to believe she has to follow rules) yelled at another student to stop talking. I stopped class to remind her that she had no right to correct another student when that was one of her worst faults. At least she had the guts to admit that she knew it was her fault.

Some adults can't even do that.

The absolute worst hypocrisy I've seen, however, comes from the idea of there being a debate between science and religion. And it's not the religious persons I'm appalled at.

I will start by reminding people that I am Catholic. Now, I rarely talk about my religion, as I rarely talk about my political view, because I believe those are private things. In fact, the bible specifically says to worship in private. I bring it up now because it is relevant to my argument.

And before you start off claiming I was brainwashed as a child, I wasn't raised with religion. Any religion. I chose to become Catholic as an adult, after years of study and reflection.

For those who know me, I'm about as logical as Spock. My conversion to Catholicism didn't change that. My faith doesn't impede my ability to understand science. I believe in both creationism and evolution equally, because, in my views, nothing happens without God's knowledge. I do not believe that religion should be taught in schools, but neither do I believe people should be persecuted for their faith.

And the hypocrisy that is, frankly, pissing me off right now is that so called "believes in science" aren't looking at facts.

Yes, I understand that there are some factions of religions, even some religions, that use their ideals to do harm to others. Yes, I know that a lot of wars have happened due to misinterpretation of the Bible and other Holy books. Yes, I get that when someone uses their religion to bring others down, discriminate against people, judge people, or lump an entire sub-category of humans into one generic labeling that it's very, very wrong. I know. I'm not blind to facts. It's horrible, and I wish there were some way to fix the issue.

But I am sick and tired of hearing people claim that ALL religions are bad, horrible, and degrading. I'm tired of hearing people claim that anyone who believes in any religion is therefore ignorant, stupid, or close-minded.

And I'm sick to my stomach that, not just "someone" but, OVER FIFTY THOUSAND PEOPLE, who claim to believe in science, reasons, and facts, "liked" this image on Facebook.

There is not one true statement in the entire image, because it deals in absolutes. Not only does it fail to accurately represent my religion, but it has no basis on facts or opinions. There is no justification or proof for anything written. It appalls my inner Journalist as well as my inner Christian. The fact that it appeared on my news feed upsets me even worse, because it means that someone whose opinion I trusted, someone who is a part of my life, liked it.

I know there are close-minded people out there. I know that many of my friends don't have similar beliefs as I do when it comes to politics and religion. Yet we still get along because we make a point to have educated discussions on things we don't agree on.

But this is the absolute worst. I have lost serious faith in humanity today.
